Billboard Objects, again

Image
A billboard object is something that always points towards the viewer.  These are common in FlightGear but have no apparent equivalent in X-Plane. Here is my way of getting them to work.  There are two separate objects here - one for internal and one for external views (each called "mainScreen"). For internal, you need to allow for the viewpoint plus the heading of the aircraft. Externally, the aircraft heading does not matter. The hide animations switch between the two versions. This is the hierarchy in the AC3D source for the model. Anything hidden/locked does not get exported to the X-Plane .obj format model file. Here is another version to show the seaparate animations. The left-hand palm tree is set for permanent view with the EXTernal animations. ( only sim/graphics/view/pilots_head_psi ) The right-hand palm tree is set for permanent view with the INTernal animations. ( sim/graphics/view/pilots_head_psi plus sim/flightmodel/position/mag_psi ) The central one switches au

Alicorn

Image
I've been doing some work on an Alicorn (a Unicorn with wings) and have made some progress on the basic animations and flight controls. Here is a short video of the first prototype / proof of concept.: https://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/forums/topic/213686-alicorn/

Billboard objects

If these kind of scenery objects already exist in X-Plane then I have done a very poor job of finding them Whatever, I've made my own now so here's how it looks. Although this video contains a helicopter it's not really a video about helicopters. It's about trees in X-Plane. It uses a billboard .obj that always points towards the viewer.

New XP10 version of Gazelle released

Image
It is over 50 years since the maiden flight of the Aérospatiale Gazelle and there are still quite a few of these still flying. Here is an SA342L version for X-Plane 10. It is the military companion of the SA342J, which was fitted with the more powerful 649 kW (870 shp) Astazou XIV engine an improved Fenestron tail rotor. With an increased take-off weight, this variant was approved on 24 April 1976, and entered service in 1977.   The Irish Air Corps had two SA342L models Gazelles, (registrations 237 [cn 1772] and 241 [cn 1854]). This particular airframe was used by Aer Chór na hÉireann (Irish Air Corps). It was delivered 30 Oct 1979 and crashed 16 Aug 2002 near Baldonnel. Its sister aircraft [Chassis number 1854] was delivered 14 Jan 1981 as registration 241. It moved to private registration in 2007 as HA-LFQ.

Red Sands Forts

Image
Maunsell army forts were designed and built for anti-aircraft defence. They comprised seven interconnected steel platforms. Four towers arranged in a semicircle ahead of the control centre and accommodation each carried a QF 3.75 inch gun, a tower to the rear of the control centre had Bofors 40 mm guns, while the seventh tower, set to one side of the gun towers and further out, was the searchlight  tower.   Red Sands Fort (U6) is at the mouth of the Thames Estuary. The towers had been connected by metal grate walk-ways. In 1959 consideration was given to refloating the Red Sands Fort and bringing the towers ashore but the costs were prohibitive. In the early 21st century, in response to proposals to demolish the fort, a group called Project Redsands was formed to try to preserve it. It is the only fort that can be visited safely from a platform in between the legs of one of the towers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maunsell_Forts#Red_Sands_Fort_(U6)    They all have solid tops and all

Chinook Animated

Image
A Boeing CH-47 Chinook as an animated scenery object. Use WED to place it in your scenery. It flies a left hand circuit over 80 seconds from and to where you place it. By default it flies to the west.   Rotate it in WED to suit. Download here: https://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/54105-chinook-animated/ Note: The source AC3D 3D-model file is included.  It is GPL licensed freeware so you can modify and redistribute it however you want to. Swap the airframe type, change the livery, modify the flight plan, include it in your own scenery distributions . . . whatever   😎   No need to ask my permission. Liveries + paint kit added as an additional download.   Swap out the " CH47_fuselage.png " graphic file in the H47-animated folder for the one you want to use. Put the "H47-animated" folder that you downloaded into the airport where you want to use it, for example: Then, open this airport in WED and choose Local (NOT Library) and you should be able to
